the space

Amidst surreal boulders, rocky hills, and the Tungabhadra river lies a charming village steeped in history, culture, and natural beauty. Once the birthplace of the Vijayanagara kingdom, the empire’s rich heritage resonates in every nook and cranny. What was life like in a village back then? Coming here feels like not much might have changed. The residents, reflecting the glory days of this majestic period in Indian history, are eager to share their skills in arts and crafts and knowledge of their traditions with the world.

Experience a slice of life in the village and stay in one of two earthy, minimal, and elegant homes here. Designed to provide a comfortable yet stylish few days in Hampi, this is the coolest place to be – in more ways than one. Uncover the secrets of a bygone era, explore the ancient ruins of Hampi, and gain a new perspective on life in a tiny and historical hamlet in Karnataka.

The people here still use their ancient spaces as places of communion, work, and ceremony. The locals understand the value of their vernacular heritage more than most other places you will visit in the country. And after a visit, you might even consider joining them to help preserve the arts and crafts of a fast evolving India.

Come visit Hoovu Cottages!

comforts

There are 2 guest houses situated near the village centre. One of the guesthouses has a single large room for two (plus the option of an extra mattress) and the other has two gorgeous rooms in a low, cavernous house. After a long day exploring the region, you will be delighted to return to cool and comfortable spaces with plenty of shade. All the rooms in both guest houses have attached baths.

Pets are only allowed in one of the cottages, so if you’d like to travel with your dog, let us know and we’ll help you out.

food

Breakfast is included as part of your stay at Hoovu Cottages. If you wish to eat dinner here, a healthy and fresh meal can also be sent over on request. As you’re likely to spend the day outdoors, you can grab lunch at a number of restaurants – and we can recommend some to you too.

ideal for

People who love exploring historical monuments and understanding the rich tapestry of South India’s history. If you’re into short treks, come here to walk through absolutely psychedelic landscapes.

The pared-down aesthetics of Hoovu Cottages themselves blend with more traditional elements of construction and create so many exciting textures and palettes to engage with as a photographer or painter.

Much work is being done around Hoovu Cottages to promote a more meaningful kind of tourism. Local village folk use invasive water hyacinth to make gorgeous woven decorative objects. Artist and designers will absolutely love coming here to see the activities that flourish around the village.
