Responsible Travel

our outlook as a responsible travel company

We design our business at the intersection of a few simple principles:

● Offering meaningful travel experiences, delivered with dignity, care and respect.
● Prioritising understated, accessible comfort over opulence.
● Encouraging slow travel, hikes and paddling through nature, walks through less-known communities, backyard exploration, and, very importantly, rest and relaxation.
● Honouring spaces we visit, including the flora, fauna, people and heritage.
● Minimising negative impacts and promoting positive effects on community and on nature.

These help us stay aligned with a broad sense of sustainability and responsibility.

How does this outlook translate for us, and how does it relate to you, in more concrete terms?

Responsibility is a way to facilitate a travel experience for you that proves to be richer and more valuable than fast-paced, rushed, mainstream holidays. We follow some principles that reflect different aspects of our core ideas.

● Food is more than sustenance. It is identity, it is life, it is a major vein of the ecosystem, and a daily affirmation of interdependence. Sourced from local farms, rooted in seasons, and tied to cultural heritage, it supports livelihoods, preserves traditions, and strengthens food security and sovereignty. Every time you travel with us, you will get to enjoy deeply satisfying meals, and often with items and ingredients that you can’t find elsewhere easily!

● Architecture reflects wisdom. Built with vernacular materials and indigenous techniques, our spaces are designed to harmonise with the land and climate, offering natural insulation, low carbon footprints, and continuity of traditional craftsmanship. You will experience not just the fingerprints of the forces that shaped the places you get to stay in, but you will also get a chance to experience the sheer ingenuity of ancestral builders who were figuring out safety and comfort for themselves and their families.

● Livelihoods are local. From cooks to guides, drivers to managers, communities are empowered through employment, upskilling, and ownership. Hospitality training, first aid, nutrition, and hygiene ensure quality while keeping rooted in knowledge, both local and global, and both modern and traditional. You will have an affirmative experience that prioritises lived experience over glamour, facilitated by people who are capable and who take joy in what they do.

● Small groups mean lighter footprints. All our stays and journeys are strictly limited to small groups. By limiting numbers, we reduce strain on ecosystems and resources, allow space for regeneration, and let nature and culture thrive with minimal disturbance. You get to journey in peace, in spaces teeming with life that can include—and even welcome—you comfortably.

● Backyard exploration reveals depth. Given the time and space to look around in a reasonably small radius, guests discover nuances and details of history, heritage, wildlife, ecology, and culture—intimate, authentic, and deeply connected to place. You may find that it is a singular joy to discover the worlds that exist within worlds.

● Ambience invites stillness. Spaces are crafted for rest, reflection, and reconnection—where slowing down isn’t a luxury, but the purpose. Why get away from a rushed life and then travel in a rush on your holiday, too?

● Experiences are never staged. There are no performances for tourists—no forced interactions or cultural displays. Stories, songs, and dances remain spontaneous and joyful. Rituals remain sacred; moments unfold naturally, shaped by curiosity and mutual presence. This means that you may not get to check things off a neatly organised list, but it also means that you get to experience amazing things that may not be a part of any popular list out there!

● Dignity and respect are non-negotiable. Everyone is treated as equals. Fair wages ensure 70–80% of revenue reaches people on the ground, affirming value, equity, and shared benefit. Staff on the ground and guests eat the same quality of food, and have access to similar provisions and facilities. You’ll be in a happy space, at ease with people who are at ease.

● Responsible tourism benefits more than just individuals. It uplifts entire communities, protects ecosystems, preserves culture, and creates models where collective well-being is the measure of success. We collaborate with SHGs, NGOs, researchers, biologists, geologists, farmers, and environmentalists—building networks that sustain both people and planet. Your patronage creates good ripples in so many spheres and lives!

● Travel is a two-way exchange. Travellers are not spectators but participants—invited to engage with humility, break old perceptions, and co-create a more equitable, connected world. When you journey with us, the holiday is not something that simply happens to you, but it is something that is lensed through you. You are a core aspect of this wonderful journey.

our approach to selecting partner properties

We follow a few practices to ensure a wholesome travel experience. One of these practices is to work with partners who hold themselves to a very high standard. Typically, properties on our roster are owned and operated by small, independent hosts and not by commercial hospitality establishments. Over 70% of our partners have chosen to list with us over the bigger online booking platforms because we share the same principles and ethics.

Our partner properties:
• are personally verified by us.
• practice the fundamentals of responsible travel.
• promote grounded comforts rather than a ‘demanding guest’ culture.
• promote sensitive appreciation of culture and nature.
• maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene.
• often use traditional construction methods with locally sourced or recycled materials.
• include many restored ancestral properties, which also preserve heritage.
• are committed to having a low ecological footprint.
• in some cases actively contribute to environmental and wildlife conservation.
• contain or have access to organic gardens and farms.
• highlight local cuisines whenever possible.
• employ locals across roles, preventing their migration and thus preserving their cultures.

Our journeys are anchored around experiential properties that follow the rigorous requirements outlined above. Overall, the journeys follow similar principles at every stage, and are:
• based on unique, hard-to-replicate concepts, without a pre-existing blueprint.
• crafted after multiple reconnaissance, based on concepts and themes.
• focused on a fine balance of activity, sights and sounds, and rest and relaxation.
