The Trans-Himalayan Drift is a series of packrafting river expeditions through the stark, cold desert landscapes of the high-altitude Trans-Himalayas. Ancient waterways run through this terrain, once revered as deities and woven into the region’s oldest myths. Later, these waterways became vital arteries of the Silk Trade that carried culture, migration, and wisdom across mountains to the great cities of Central Asia. Uniquely shaped by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates, this is a region of geological marvel unlike anything we can imagine.
This first edition follows a keystone glacial river, Ldumra (which translates to Valley of Flowers) as it winds between the towering Saltoro (7,200 m) and Saser (7,672 m) ranges, carrying us over 90 km, from the shadow of its glacial source to its confluence with the mighty Shyok. Along the way, we pass through an extraordinary geological corridor and stop to explore petroglyph sites, sulphur hot-springs, hidden monasteries, and other quiet traces of the region’s cultural and ecological history. This journey offers a water-level view of that vastness: one where the landscape shifts gradually and perspective deepens over the course of the expedition.
Like all Knowhere Travel journeys, this is an adventure fuelled not just by adrenaline but through pace and attention designed to create an overwhelming realisation of the grandeur of the world around and within us. We travel in small groups, on packrafts, in a rare and one-of-a-kind exploration of this region through conversation, discovery, and stillness. This is an expedition in every sense, cutting through corridors of rock and time. Yet within that intensity lies space for many ways of being: a profound reset for those carrying the weight of routine, a wellspring of perspective and a canvas of inspiration.
Arrive in Leh and settle into an ancestral home by the Indus River that is over a 100 years old. We take you through the history of this region through its architecture, food, monasteries and palaces, setting context for our exploration ahead. The first 2 days are for acclimatisation: to meet the team, review gear, and run through safety protocols. On day 3 we’ll spend the afternoon on a calm stretch of water, practising strokes and rescue drills. Evenings will be unhurried and perfect for exploring the country surroundings and for first glimpses of the high‑desert sky.
We cross a high mountain pass and descend into the Ldumra valley, spending the day immersed in high-altitude landscapes, observing the unique ecology, with chances to spot wildlife along the way. Tonight’s stay is at a lodge that once served as a caravanserai for Silk Route travellers seeking rest and shelter. From here, take in uninterrupted mountain views and watch the river glide past Seabuckthorn forests in the lodge’s foreland. It’s a moment to ground yourself before the adventure begins (and your last shower before spending five days on the expedition!)
We begin the expedition in the northernmost reaches of India, beyond the last villages and just a few kilometres below the glacier’s mouth, at the eastern edge of the Karakoram range. Day 5 is a gentle float that allows you to settle into your rhythm before we set up camp on a quiet riverbank beneath a canopy of stars.
The following day takes us on a longer paddle downstream, surrounded by vast, unfolding landscapes, until we arrive at our next campsite.
On day 7 we begin the day on land, with an excursion to a cascading waterfall, explore an ancient monastery, hidden caves, and sites etched with age-old petroglyphs (historic rock carvings). After lunch, we take to the river once more, paddling past dramatic cliffs until we reach a sacred lake cradled between sheer rock walls. Here we set up camp, ringed by peaks and absolute stillness. As dusk settles and the snow line catches its last light, a special surprise awaits to ease your weary muscles before dinner by the fire.
The next day starts slow with a gentle hike circumnavigating the lake’s edge. We push off and paddle until midday where we pause for lunch at an ancient palace atop a rugged cliff. Then, return to the water, drifting downstream to our next riverside camp.
On day 9 we’re back on the water for the final stretch of our paddle, the river widens and the valley opens fully before us. Snow-capped summits of the Ladakh range catching the light, golden sand dunes and willow groves are the climactic views signalling the journey’s end. By noon, we take out, returning to the lodge to clean and stow our gear, enjoy a long, hot shower, and savor a celebratory meal, reflecting on the vast landscapes we’ve traversed.
On day 10 we drive back to Leh over high passes. The last two days are spent at a contemporary, slow Ladakhi guesthouse. A buffer day in town lets you rest, wander the bazaar, or simply replay the river in your mind. While you are in Leh many add-on activities are possible like a heritage walk in the city, visits to museums, or an orchard lunch experience in a neighbouring village before departing on day 12.
We hope to see you on the river again!
You are welcomed into this region by a 100+ year old restored ancestral home. This space is gentle and elegant, yet quietly carries the weight of the land’s history. Acclimatise and warm up in this lovingly cared for abode with hosts, who continue to carry forward a spirit of quiet, authentic hospitality. The stay is equipped with a combination of attached and common bathrooms with all modern comforts.
Your entry into the Ldumra valley begins at a quietly sprawling ancestral property with expansive views of the Eastern Karakoram ranges. This was once a caravanserai where travellers of the Silk Route took shelter. A row of modern, thoughtfully equipped rooms opens out to wide lawns shaded by age-old trees, and the quiet, spacious vibe of this stay offers time and space to move, or meditate, to ground yourself completely before the expedition begins.
For four nights, you’ll camp at pristine spots along the Ldumra river, carefully chosen to give you access to remarkable geological and historical sites and for nights that unfold skies with countless shooting stars and the Milky Way shining overhead. Sleep in spacious tents on a twin-sharing basis, with inflatable mattresses, warm sleeping bags, and hearty, wholesome meals prepared by the kitchen team. Campsites are equipped with dry-pit toilet tents. Guests participate in helping set up and close camp every day
End your journey with two nights at a modern interpretation of a 40-year-old traditional Ladakhi house. This is a space designed for unwinding, resting and reflecting on the experience, with sunlit rooms, soft corners to curl into, and a yoga-shala-style common area that invites slow mornings and quiet afternoons. The stay is equipped with a combination of attached and common bathrooms with all modern comforts.
At the guesthouses and lodges, you are served home-cooked meals, often prepared with fresh and seasonal ingredients from farms or local village markets. While Ladakhi cuisine anchors the table, what’s served is also a window into the evolving idea of authenticity. You may eat traditional dishes like skyu or thukpa one day, and find dal and rice, salads, or homemade bread pockets the next.
On the river, mealtimes are nourishing and lavish. Mornings feature a wholesome spread of beverages, cereals, breads with an assortment of spreads and more to fuel your day. Lunches are packed and shared during breaks on the riverbank. Evening snacks and dinners are prepared at camp and will include a more lavish, generous spread of Indian curries with and without meat, rotis and rice, fresh vegetables, salads, mouth-watering appetizers, asian-inspired soups, noodles, continental delicacies and desserts crafted to satiate your every craving and sustain you through the expedition.
While we introduce you to authentic Ladakhi flavours on several occasions on this journey, we want to ensure every meal is well-balanced, satisfying, and familiar enough for you to eat substantial portions that keep you well-fuelled during the expedition.
The Ldumra River, a tributary of the Shyok and part of the greater Indus river system, flows through a dramatic U-shaped valley. Born of glacial melt from the Siachen glacier, the braided channels interlace through its spine with steep slopes rising on either side. The river is both ancient and alive, carrying with it traces of human and natural history that remain scattered across the valley as cultural and geological relics. The river isn’t vast in volume but is fast, moving through dramatically changing landscapes. As we float downstream, what were tall, jagged rock cliffs turn into vast, golden sand dunes. Amidst the shades of grey and ochre, flashes of life stand out in flashes. The glowing indigo plumage of a Bluethroat, bright pink Sias, yellow Buttercups, and purple Larkspur wildflowers punctuate the banks. Seabuckthorn forests and wetlands thrive and mesmerise against the barren slopes. The valley is habitat to wildlife like the snow leopard, lynx, ibex, and Himalayan wolf, foxes, stoats, and pikas: creatures adapted to extremes, camouflaging seamlessly into the landscape yet unmistakably present.
This is the first and only expedition of its kind of this valley, following the winding river downstream, with a blend of on-land exploration of a place where geology is raw and visible, life is tenacious, and every stone unturned feels like stepping into deep time.
Knowhere Travel Co. has been studying and developing the concept of river exploration through Packrafting since 2020. Under our sister brand, Packrafting India, we’ve pioneered experiential river expeditions in the country, running journeys in the Northeast of India as part of our ‘The Brahmaputra Drift’ series, along the Talo River in Arunachal Pradesh and around the river island of Majuli in Assam.
Packrafting is a fusion of backpacking and rafting, bringing you an amphibious adventure like no other.
Originating as a lightweight, inflatable raft designed for backcountry travel, packrafts unlock access to remote rivers, serene lakes, and untouched wilderness.
Since they are highly manoeuvrable, packrafts can give you the freedom to navigate water bodies that are otherwise difficult to access.
The Trans-Himalayan Drift is a fully supported and guided expedition, designed with safety and comfort in mind. Our guide-to-guest ratio is 1:2 on the water, with three to four safety kayakers from the expedition team and one Knowhere Travel tour leader accompanying up to eight guests. Two support rafts carry trained team members to assist throughout the journey. All guides are swift water rescue technicians and certified in Wilderness First Aid/responders. The expedition support team brings together local expertise and international experience, with members from Ladakh, Uttarakhand, Nepal, and Russia.

We provide water shoes and grip gloves for comfort both in and out of the water, and a water-proof bow bag to access your personal gear.
As for support, we will have two big rafts alongside us. One ferrying our kitchen team, camping equipment, and cooking rations. A second raft with backup gear will paddle alongside our guests.
Our teams are equipped with comprehensive field-repair and medical kits, including emergency oxygen cylinders and a pulse oximeter to manage high-altitude conditions. Road support vehicles are on standby for emergencies, ensuring assistance is always close at hand.
It is important to us that we collaborate with people rooted in the region. For this expedition, we’ve partnered with Tsering Chotak, one of India’s top river guides. With decades of experience and a strong focus on river safety and environmental ethics, his team brings deep local knowledge and thoughtful practices to every journey. From water conservation to waste management, they work closely with local communities and environmental groups to ensure that each trip is run with care and respect for the fragile ecology of Ladakh.
Our packrafts are Bluesign certified, which guarantees that environment-friendly material is used at the time of production. Our river journey is non-motorised. We are certified LNT practitioners and follow the Leave No Trace principles as part of all of our experiences.
For over thirteen years, our journeys in Ladakh have been shaped by deep local connections and long-standing relationships across the region. Konchok Paldan, our head of operations in Ladakh, knows the land as his own. We work closely with small, family-run stays, local guides, and community networks that help us navigate this landscape with respect and care. Every Knowhere Travel experience here is rooted in trust, shared knowledge, and the belief that travel is most meaningful when it sustains the people and places that make it possible.
This expedition is designed for those who have some familiarity with the outdoors – guests who have joined our Drifts before, have paddled before and enjoy it, or anyone that enjoys with camping, hiking, or outdoor sports. While this is not an extreme expedition, it does ask for a spirit of adventure.
Over five days, you’ll paddle 90kms of the river, hike along stark, beautiful trails, and experience the unique energy of Ladakh’s high-altitude terrain. Days can be long, with around 4 hours of paddling, and evenings can get chilly but you are in safe hands with experienced professionals whose first priority is your safety and comfort.
If you’re considering this journey, here are some things to keep in mind:
You don’t need to be an athlete. An average level of fitness and comfort with outdoor activity is enough. We pace the journey mindfully, with plenty of rest, guidance, and support.
You’ll be camping in the wilderness, going without creature comforts, and adapting when nature takes the lead. Conditions can change: river levels may shift, weather may demand we stop early or take a new course. If you’re willing to embrace the unpredictability, this journey will reward you.
This isn’t for those wanting to work remotely or focus mainly on photos and videos. It’s for those ready to disconnect, slow down, and truly experience the journey.
Open to adults 21 years and above. (We may consider 18+ participants with relevant experience.)
