the space

Perched above the quiet expanse of a neatly painted countryside, Tanzin’s Khangsar stands as a gentle guardian of Lahaul’s architectural and cultural memory. This restored heritage home, built from stone, timber, and hand-plastered earth, invites guests to step into an older time- one shaped by mountain seasons and ancestral wisdom.

Every corner of the house tells a story: from ancient relics unearthed during its revival to heirlooms gifted by the community. Tanzin’s Khangsar is as much a home as it is a living museum. The interiors honour traditional Lahauli design: warm, textured, and elemental while the liveliness of the hosts and caretakers brings a bright warmth to the stillness of the space.

Tanzin’s Khangsar is deeply committed to ecological balance, and gently urges guests to be thoughtful and sustainable in their stay. Under the wide, starlit sky, facing the mighty Himalayas, you’ll find a home built with intention, with a quiet dedication to heritage, conservation, and community.

comforts

The rooms are each unique and crafted in the traditional Lahauli style, while offering picturesque views of Himalayan landscape.

The home includes two triple rooms, one double room, a single room, and a dormitory that sleeps five- perfect for groups or solo travellers alike. The bathrooms are unattached and shared but well equipped with modern comforts like water heaters to ensure a comfortable experience. A traditional dry-pit toilet is also available, designed to naturally compost waste.

food

Tanzin’s Khangsar delights guests with a variety of north Indian dishes made from seasonal, locally sourced produce- both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options are available. For larger groups, traditional favourites like Himachali buckwheat pancakes or Tibetan Thukpa can be requested, served when ingredients are in season and available.

Throughout the day, guests can enjoy ample servings of tea, coffee, and warm spring water to keep cozy. In keeping with the property’s eco-conscious ethos, the use of plastic bottles and packaged foods is strongly discouraged. Meals are best enjoyed together at set times in the communal dining area, where each dish is served fresh and with care.

ideal for

Tanzin’s Khangsar is perfect for those seeking a quieter, more multidimensional mountain retreat and travelers drawn to the rich culture and history of this unique region. Artists looking for a meditative space to create will find inspiration here, while adventure seekers can explore nearby trails or tackle more challenging hikes that originate nearby.

Lovers of well-preserved heritage and authentic cultural experiences will feel a genuine sense of belonging. Whether you’re planning a long retreat or just passing through on your way to explore beyond, Tanzin’s Khangsar offers a warm welcome and a charming experience that will stay with you.

getting there

Reaching Tanzin’s Khangsar is part of the experience- a scenic 3-hour drive from Manali, or an ideal 2-day stopover for those traveling from Leh with interesting monasteries and villages on the way. Both towns are accessible by public buses or hired cars, though public transport pauses during the winter months.

From the main road, a gentle 5-minute uphill walk leads you to the heritage home, offering a quiet transition from road to refuge. The team is happy to assist with your luggage along the way.

things to do

The best way to experience Tanzin’s Khangsar is to immerse yourself in the surrounding nature. Scenic trails stretch out in every direction, friendly locals tending to their farmlets greet you with warm smiles along the way. Wander these paths to take in unblemished views of the Himalayas and the river far below.

These trails lead you past ancient monasteries, through orchards and fields, and into forests of juniper and willow, alive with rich birdlife. A stroll through nearby villages offers a glimpse into the unique blend of Himachal and Tibetan culture that defines this region.

For those seeking planned excursions, car trips to Deepak Tal and other lakes and ponds can be easily arranged, as is a drive to Baralacha La, a pass where you can experience snow even outside the winter months.

When the weather turns too cold for exploring, you’ll find yourself fully immersed in this relic-like homestay, rich with stories waiting to be uncovered.

Don’t forget to visit the souvenir shop just below the road, run by the host, where you’ll find authentic Himalayan crafts made by local artisans.

Once a year, the stay also organises a mud plastering workshop, giving guests a chance to connect with their heritage first hand.
