the space

At an altitude of over 2000 metres above sea level, discover The Nuthatch, your quaint homestay in Kumaon. If you’ve been longing for a tranquil getaway, this is your destination. Here, only three families call the village home, making it the ideal spot to immerse yourself in nature and soak in the untouched beauty of the Himalaya. Let the melodies of birds envelop you, and take in the majestic sight of Mt. Nanda Devi, India’s second-highest mountain at 7,816 meters.

The closest roadhead is a good 2 km away from The Nuthatch – don’t take the isolation for granted!

Your hosts, Sundar and his family welcome you with genuine Kumaoni warmth in their cosy homestay nestled within a wildlife sanctuary. But The Nuthatch is more than just a place to rest your head; it’s an invitation to marvel at the natural wonders that surround you.

comforts

The retreat offers 2 comfy rooms that can easily accommodate up to 4 guests, but if you’re bringing a few more, don’t fret! Each room has an extra bed, meaning they can happily house up to 6 guests.

After a day of exploring, unwind with a warm shower courtesy of the available hot water at the homestay. And, to truly refresh, you can enjoy a sip of the purest spring water, a gift directly from nature’s bounty.

The rooms offer heaters throughout the winter months so you can stay snug and warm. And for that perfect cuppa, as you gaze out at the serene landscapes, feel free to use the electric kettle available in your room.

The Nuthatch is within a wildlife sanctuary, so we suggest you leave your four-legged pals at home to ensure their safety.

food

Kumaoni cuisine mirrors the region’s deep cultural roots and its vast bounty of natural ingredients. With a blend of traditional cooking methods, indigenous ingredients, and the love with which it’s prepared, the food is a gastronomic delight that is both nutritious and flavoursome. The staple is rice served with various daals and curries. The usual favourite is Kafuli/Palak Ka Kaapa, a rich green leafy curry made from spinach or fenugreek leaves. Non-vegetarian delicacies include poultry, mutton, and Kumaoni raita, made with curd and mustard.

Breakfast, lunch, evening tea, and dinner will be served at fixed times.

getting there

Pantnagar is the closest airport, while Kathgodam is the nearest rail station. From either location, expect a 4-5 hour drive to the starting point or the road head where safe parking for vehicles is available. From here, there is a 2 km walk to The Nuthatch, which should take between 45-60 minutes, depending on the pace of the guest. You will have a guide and porter to help you along the walk.

things to do

The dense forests of Kumaon are a living testament to the region’s rich biodiversity. Guests can go on a half-day nature trail, exploring the vast expanses of green and listening to the rustling leaves and distant calls of the wild.
