The Shelter is a large and spacious mountain home, situated at a height of 7000 feet above sea level. It is located 52 km from the concrete jungle of Munnar, spoilt over the last decade due to mass tourism. Set in splendid isolation with stunning views of the Western Ghats, the home shares its border with the pristine Anamudi Shola National Park. There are excellent opportunities to trek into untouched shola forests with splendid biodiversity sighting opportunities. Formerly a eucalyptus plantation, the home has been painstakingly designed and developed by the hosts over five years, reclaiming materials like discarded timber.
Originally built as a retirement home, the hosts decided to open up the space to travellers soon after. The setting is truly out of a fairytale, with jaw-dropping views and incredible skies. If you want to experience wild Kerala, this is it.
The Shelter, built entirely of wood and stone, comes with three spacious rooms, each with an occupancy of up to 5 adults. The rooms have comfortable bedding and duvets for maximum cosiness. All rooms come with ensuite western loos and an indoor fireplace with a rock chimney. Access the kitchen at any time for coffee, tea, etc. The main entrance and patio overlook the orchards and the misty valleys of Idukki.
All meals are home-cooked with locally-sourced vegetables and meat. All meals are typical of South Indian cuisine and are prepared by the hosts. Cabbage, potatoes, and herbs are sourced straight out of the property’s garden. Barbecues can be arranged on request.
The space is ideal for people who like to stay away from the typical hill stations and enjoy some quiet time. A great option for families, friends, and couples. It is a naturalist’s dream with scores of endemic birds, moths, and butterflies. Over 200 species of avian life have been spotted in and around the property. Those who like to hike in pristine natural surroundings don’t need to look any further. This is prime tiger territory and large mammals such as elephants, gaurs, langurs, leopards, and wild boar can be spotted.
The property is located in a beautiful farming village lying on the eastern side of the Western Ghats, 50 km north of Munnar. Accurate details will be given at the time of confirmation.
