Enter a warm, family establishment filled with decades of stories about Kodava culture, jazzy plantation parties, and the recipes of mothers passed down through generations. At the heart of it is a warm and welcoming family that is eager to have guests from all walks of life. Come and enjoy a fleeting but unforgettable experience. Sunbird’s Nest focuses as much on this ambience of bonhomie as it does on the functioning of the property itself.
The family supports the community in a couple of ways. They’ve spent time educating local employees from around the district on recycling water and segregating waste responsibly. The owners happily admit that the water saved from their efforts helps the water supply in this rain-shadow region. The garden is a guilt-free little paradise that thrives on recycled water and some TLC. Look around, and there are beautiful birds of immense diversity. You can even spot the bulbul nests peeping out of various curios the family have collected from their own travels. Prepare to be disarmed by all that charm!
comforts
4 rooms in a low-roof cottage stand side by side and open out into a garden of flowers. The rooms are furnished with thoughtfully curated furniture. Lounge among an eclectic selection of fabrics, rugs, and artworks. Double beds and attached baths are in every room, while the garden dining area is a hop, skip, and jump away. The rooms are air-conditioned, with WiFi and power back up – but those luxuries are offset by the efforts of the hosts to stick to a minimal and low-waste lifestyle.
food
Kodava food cooked by experts that you can smell wafting into the garden to welcome you for a hearty meal. There is also a variety of other dishes that reflect colonial plantation life from the turn of the century, continental food, and freshly brewed coffee every morning straight from the family’s estate in Coorg.
Lunch and dinner are not served at the property but guests are welcome to order in from restaurants or from home cooks, who prepare fresh meals and deliver to the homestay.
