the space

Set along the banks of the Indus River in a quiet village, Inn-dus is part of a landscape where life follows the seasons. In the colder months, families from the surrounding high-altitude regions descend to this stretch of the valley where the air is gentler, the water flows closer, and the land becomes a winter refuge.

Today, this home in the lowlands, opens its doors to travellers, offering a rare window into its quiet corridors and everyday Ladakhi rituals. It was born from a vision shaped in part by host’s visit to Auroville, where she saw how homes could be rooted in both hospitality and sustainability. Inspired, she returned to Ladakh to bring those values into her own home. Run by a local family who moved back to their family village after many years of living in Leh. You will be hosted by Amale (mother in Ladakhi), her daughters, and their father, Inn-dus is less a stay and more a lived-in experience. It’s a place that feels like home the moment you arrive, it’s a place to settle into stillness and be gently hosted by people who live with both rootedness and care.

comforts

Inn-dus has two wings- one part is the original house where the family stays, the other is separated and slightly more modern. The original section is the heart of the home: the family’s traditional Ladakhi residence with three double guest rooms. These rooms carry an old-world charm, with soft quilted blankets, warm wood finishes, and little study tables with glowing lamps.

The upstairs common area is set up with warmth for you to sit back with a book, in the natural light, and spend time in quiet reflection. Downstairs, you’ll find the family’s kitchen and dining room (Chansa), where ancient copper utensils still line the shelves. In the original wing, bathrooms are shared and thoughtfully designed, one on each floor, with modern fittings and running hot water to keep you comfortable through Ladakh’s colder spells.

A short walk across the family’s farm patch, past where the cows, and horses are housed, leads to the newer wing, a minimal structure that holds six rooms, each with attached modern bathrooms and a more contemporary feel, without losing the soul of the place. Each part of the house, old or new, carries the quiet intention and warmth with which it’s been built. You can feel it in every corner. Inn-dus has a way of making you feel less like a guest and more like you’ve come home.

Inn-dus is open between the 15th of April to the 30th of October each year.

food

Meals at Inn-dus are lovingly prepared by the family, especially Amale and her daughters, who bring generations of traditional Ladakhi culinary knowledge to the table. Recipes are rooted in heritage but thoughtfully adapted for modern palates, creating food that is soulful, nourishing, and beautifully presented.

Expect warm bowls of chutagi- a delicate barley dumpling stew made with seasonal vegetables grown just outside on the farm. Alongside, you might find crisp, sesame-dressed salads or khambir pockets, traditional Ladakhi bread stuffed with eggs, greens, vegetables and more. Breakfasts are hearty, with Indian classics and local twists, always served with piping hot tea or good coffee.

All meals are vegetarian and deeply seasonal, reflecting what is locally grown and available. Eggs are offered for breakfast. For those staying a little longer, you’re welcome to step into the kitchen and learn how to make some of these traditional dishes. The family is generous with their time and recipes, and cooking together is often one of the most memorable parts of the stay.

All meals are served in the family’s traditional dining room, where stories, warmth, and flavour are passed around with equal care.

ideal for

Inn-dus is ideal for those seeking a quieter, slower encounter with Ladakh, where tradition is not merely preserved but also lived. It’s a perfect place for anyone curious about the rhythm of life in the Indus Valley, surrounded by towering slanting mountains and the flowing river that gives this region life.

Whether you’re interested in Ladakh’s culture, small-scale farming, or simply want a peaceful base from which to reflect and rest, this is a place where everything moves with deep care and intention. The home, much like this quiet village, with its fewer than 35 households, mirrors a way of life that’s slow, rooted, and richly aware of the seasons.

Ideal for travellers who want to learn by observing, doing, and listening: whether it’s helping out on the farm, joining the family in the kitchen, or simply taking in the sounds of the valley.

getting there

Inn-dus is located only two hours from Leh, along the banks of the Indus River. To reach the stay, you’ll follow a small road until it leads you to a bridge. Crossing over brings you to the quieter side of the river, where the home stands surrounded by its farms. Parking is available inside the property. The exact location and arrival instructions will be shared once your booking is confirmed.

things to do

There’s no phone reception at Inn-dus just yet, and that might be one of its greatest luxuries. Bring along a book (or two) and settle in. Time moves differently here, shaped by the seasons, the land, and the quiet presence of the people who call it home.

The family farm is an integral part of the experience. Depending on the time of year, you might help pick delicate chamomile blossoms for the family’s small-batch tea label, or take part in seasonal farm work, be it sowing, weeding, or harvesting. There are cows, fields, and flowing water all around and you’re welcome to simply observe or participate as much as you like.

For those who stay a little longer, we can also arrange a Ladakhi cooking session with the family. You can learn how to prepare dishes like momos or chutagi by hand.

A memorable experience during your stay is a drive up to the high-altitude settlement, the summer village of the same community. A winding mountain road climbs steadily upward, crossing picture-book streams and opening out into sweeping views of the valley below. Once here, at nearly 14,500 ft you’re surrounded by big mountains, meadows, farms, and quiet trails that thread through the village, ideal for an unhurried hike followed by a picnic lunch.

If time or pace calls for something slower, there are plenty of ways to explore in the lower village too. Gentle walks wind past small farms and through fields, along glistening feeder streams, or up to spots that offer a clear view of the Indus River below.

And for a handful of guests, when the time, season, and intention align, a Chang tasting session may be offered. It’s a quiet and thoughtful experience that invites you to pause, sip, and feel the stillness that defines this place.
