the space

As you drive into one of the most densely forested parts of Kodagu, past the colourful village of Suntikoppa and the Harangi river, a tributary of the Kaveri, you will reach a beautiful riverside estate.

Welcome to Shizen by Hillyside Estate. Nestled in the middle of a coffee plantation, next to the family’s ancestral home, is a one bedroom cottage waiting for a guest like you!

It wasn’t too long ago that Shizen’s hosts packed their bags in the city and made their way to this family estate. Parts of the estate are over a hundred years old. The hosts have cultivated organic, natural and shade grown coffee and pepper over the years along with a range of fruiting trees including avocado, mangoes, jackfruit, and bananas.

The estate hasn’t used chemical fertilizers and herbicides for over 18 years to prevent the flow of chemical runoff into the adjoining river and allow the land to naturally replenish itself.

During the monsoon, the estate is surrounded by the river, forming a little island. The home is brimming with positive energy and a sense of peace. Life here is slow and languid, providing space to dream, observe, and meditate.

comforts

Waiting for you on arrival is a one-bedroom cottage with a lovely sit-out that overlooks the Coffee plantation. Look across a stone pathway and the gate to see the family’s own home, their pets often lounging in the foyer.

The cottage comes equipped with a kitchenette (kettle, refrigerator, basic cutlery, and drinking water included), a dining area, a cozy living room with sofas, an extra bed and a small collection of books and games.

The bedroom is tucked away by the living room and has a comfortable double bed. There is a spacious bath attached.

The outdoor sit out is perfect for a cup of coffee or tea in the mornings, and you are likely to meet another set of neighbours – a family of hornbills in a tree nearby.

food

In Coorg, expect nothing but the homeliest of Kodagu meals, and this homestay is no exception. The hosts are very keen on healthy living and everything they cook is intended to nourish and comfort the stomach. Eat soft red rice with piquant kachampuli-infused gravies (chicken and pork), a variety of fresh vegetable palyas, akki rotis, refreshing salads, and other produce available according to season.

You can also head out to Kushalnagar or Madikeri and follow the hosts’ recommendations for a sumptuous local fare.

Don’t miss asking for a glass of delicious and gently-spiced buttermilk after a long walk around the estate.

ideal for

Shizen is ideal for a very small group – couples will find lots of privacy and solitude, or a group of three friends can enjoy a nice weekend together.

If you want to travel solo, you’ll appreciate the safety that comes with the hosts living right next door.

Small families are also welcome, with plenty to do around for a great holiday in Coorg.

Artists might enjoy bringing your drawing books to scribble your thoughts and feelings.

Shizen is open to pets, so we highly recommend bringing your canine companion along for a good ol’ weekend away with the family.

The hosts offer curated journeys to connect with the natural world through Permaculture, regenerative practices and sustainable ecologies, and to commune with one’s inner landscape through holistic healing modalities that harmonise body, mind and soul.
