the isle of palms
As the name suggests, the property is set on a lone river island in the midst of emerald green waters and coconut palm trees. The property was originally a fisherman’s house that has been painstakingly restored using Mangalorean and Keralan architectural styles. A lot of the woodwork and furniture at the property have been sourced from Kerala in addition to using a lot of up-cycled materials. The original structure has been retained and a new attachment has been made with the addition of an extra bedroom. The entire property has red oxide flooring, a native technique which keeps the floor cool and allows it to breathe. Red oxide flooring is extremely adaptable to the climatic conditions and is suited for the geography in India. Apart from being the only ones on the island, there’s also a tiny natural beach on the island, ideal to sunbathe, take a swim, read a book, or simply doze off on the hammock to the sounds of fish occasionally popping up to see you. Thanks to its surroundings, there are at least 32 different species of birds that visit in and around the property. The Isle of Palms is an island preserved to let you experience nature in her honest beauty with enviable views of the backwaters and the sea.
The property has two bedrooms, a large bedroom that has two double beds to sleep 4 guests, with its own en suite bathroom. The other bedroom has a double bed with a detached bathroom. Both bathrooms have hot and cold running water with showers. The living space has two day beds to lounge or sleep in if additional beds are required. Ideal for a group of up to 8-10 guests to have a comfortable night’s rest. The house has a modern and well equipped kitchen with a microwave, fridge, induction plate, a water purification system and a washing machine. As a self catering home, guests are encouraged to do their own beds and dishes. As a service, the caretaker will clean the house everyday. The property is operational through the year.
Your breakfast, lunch or dinner is usually served to you on the outdoor patio with views of the flowing emerald waters. Meals usually consist of exotic local fare bursting with freshness and flavour, a reason enough to visit the property. All fish or crustaceans are freshly caught from around the island.
As a rule, and to maintain the exclusivity of the experience, only one group of travelers are allowed at the property at a time. Couples, families and friend groups of 8 to 10 adults are allowed. People interested in fishing, birdwatching, exploring coastal Katnataka lifestyles are welcome.
Located 1.5 hour away from Mangalore airport and well connected by the Konkan railway. The only way here is to hop onto the boat and paddle across to the island, which takes a few minutes. Your vehicles can be safely parked across the island. Accurate details will be provided upon confirmation.
things to do
A lot of guests prefer the art of doing nothing while here. But for those who like a bit of action, a 10 min hop across the river is a health centre offering therapeutic oil/gooseberry/salt massages to truly invigorate you. One can also explore mangroves, the floating forests of the sea by foot and if you’re lucky, follow the footprints of the elusive river otters. Udupi and its renowned Krishna temple is just 20 kms and the stunning and unique St. Mary’s Island with its columnar Basaltic rock formations is 30 kms. If you’re in the mood for a bbq, take the available bbq unit, pick your favorite spot on the island and get going under the stars. One of the favourite activities here are the sunrise and sunset cruises to catch a gorgeous ball of orange coming up against the horizon. Bird watching is a favourite amongst the bird watchers.
