the space

Bangalore has numerous beautiful places in the surrounding areas making it unnecessary to stay in the city during the weekends. A lovely taluk situated in the rocky, shrub-forested belt near Savandurga offers one such place. Bekkina Kaadu is a private retreat and tinkering space that has now been converted into a small group getaway and homestay.

After a brief drive, you will come across a mud house displaying turquoise blue window panes. Adjacent to it is another cottage with a verandah extending around it, tempting you to catch glimpses of Tickell’s Blue Flycatchers and Paradise Flycatchers fluttering amidst the trees. The hosts have chosen to preserve the impressive ancient well but have established a cosy sanctuary over a 50-year old former pump house.

The resourceful construction methods employed have guaranteed the presence of a splendid loft furnished with a balcony providing the opportunity to relish the verdant views.

Come to Bekkina Kaadu, and take languorous walks around the area, crossing a clear stream at various points. You have everything here for a small group getaway right outside Bangalore.

comforts

Guests can choose from 3 available cottages with double beds. While one cottage is located closer to the common dining area, the other two offer ample indoor and outdoor space, perfect for socialising. One of the cottages is ideal for a couple, while the other is ideal for a small family or group of 3. Each cottage is equipped with an attached bathroom. One of the bathrooms contains an old-fashioned water heater (boiler) situated under a large skylight that allows guests to admire the blue skies above.

At the pump house, there is a charming kitchenette that you can use to prepare light meals and refreshments (subject to availability) for a picnic or store a bottle of wine if you desire.

You will be provided with clean towels and linens. The semi-outdoor space has vibrant carpets, cosy seating arrangements, and relaxing lounge areas that invite you to spend some time there.

food

Apart from dinner, meals are served in the common dining area (this involves a short walk). The options here are delightful comfort foods perfect for post-meal napping. The meals are mostly vegetarian, but there’s usually a side of delicious chicken. Peppery rasams, soft boiled rice, crispy papadams, and tangy pickles and jams made on the farm are staples, while breakfast includes fresh fruit. Tea and coffee are available during the day, all you have to do is kindly request the friendly caretakers.

ideal for

Spaces like these are open to people who want to discover small biodiversity or do some ‘chilled-out’ birding. It’s also a good place to bring a small group of friends who want a more rustic setting for a casual weekend hang out. Bekkina Kaadu is situated close enough to Savandurga that you’re likely to find yourself on a trail or three. But there’s enough space to wander around inside area itself, and you might just want to skip a long hike and catch the sunset from a rocky vantage point closer to your rooms.

getting there

Bekkina Kaadu is less than 50 km (off Mysore Road) from the city of Bangalore. On a good day, you’ll reach here from Bangalore in less than 2 hours.

There are also local BMTC buses or Volvo buses operating in this region. These will drop you 500 m from the property at scheduled times.

Bekkina Kaadu is ideal for those who prefer public transportation.

things to do

Bring a book or three – this is a quiet and peaceful environment that allows one to catch up on some reading. Go on trails around – hike to Savandurga, visit the dam, or explore Magadi.

Dip your feet in the sparkling stream that’s a hop, skip, and a jump from your cottage. The well is fun to swim in too, but we urge caution as it can get slippery and dangerous. We strictly forbid drinking alcohol and getting near the well.

Bring a small group here for an interesting yoga-based weekend, or a crafts workshop – endless inspiration to be found here.
