the space

Mabel’s Eden is a soft, elegant ode to Ladakh’s ancient and prosperous past. Located in a peaceful village 15 mins from Leh, close to the Indus river, this restored ancestral home that is over a hundred years old, stands with quiet pride, with its tall walls that taper gently and elegantly towards the top, a subtle structural wisdom that has held homes steady for generations. Its presence is timeless, and its interiors are gentle and tender.

The restoration is sensitive and full of quiet charm: a skylight that lets in a soft, golden glow, a traditional dining room still intact with original Ladakhi charm, and a small farm just outside that grows seasonal produce alongside flowering plants.

There’s a quiet magic to this home, one that lingers in the air like a memory: in the way the past still lives in the walls, in the warmth of your host’s welcome, and in the soft, enduring charm that wraps itself around every corner.

comforts

Mabel’s Eden spans three levels, each connected by wooden stairways, old carved doors, and held together by ancient beams that speak of the home’s long history.

The first floor houses three twin bedrooms with traditional matted floors that keep the space warm and inviting with two shared baths. Each room is fitted with quilted beds, soft sheer cotton curtains that filter in a gentle glow, side tables, wooden racks and cupboards for your belongings, offering everything you need for a restful stay.

Upstairs, the top floor sits on an open terrace and includes one spacious double room with an attached bathroom, perfect for families, and two twin bedrooms that open onto the terrace which is bathed in starlight by night. Both floors are equipped with two thoughtfully located shared bathrooms, with water heaters and all the essential modern comforts.

Around the house, you’ll find cozy nooks: soft cushions, quiet corners, sun-warmed seating areas on the terrace, and a couch facing the fields outside. The traditional dining room on the first floor offers a place to unwind, share meals, or simply take in the calm. The building is well-equipped and is largely self-sufficient, with the host and her family living in a little wooden home right next door.

This property is open from April to October of every year.

food

All meals are shared in the family’s traditional dining room next door, making the experience feel less like staying at a guesthouse, and more like being welcomed into a family home.

Meals at Mabel’s Eden are simple, soulful, and cooked with care. Expect homely twists on local dishes like stuffed khambir pockets alongside comforting staples like dal, rice, seasonal stir-fried vegetables, and refreshing salads. Everything is made fresh, using ingredients either grown in the garden or sourced locally, resulting in meals that are both nourishing and satisfying.

ideal for

Mabel’s Eden is ideal for those seeking a quiet retreat with a sense of intimacy and ease. The home strikes a rare balance between private and peaceful, yet warm and lived-in. It’s also perfect for travellers who enjoy conversations and connection. getting there

Tucked away in one of the winding village lanes, Mabel’s Eden keeps a quiet presence, just as it always has. Parking is available within the property. Exact directions and access details will be shared with you upon booking.

things to do

Some of the most rewarding experiences at Mabel’s Eden are the quietest ones, sitting still in the sun, listening to the breeze, or watching the light shift across the walls of a home that seems gently paused in time.

A short walk around the village will introduce you to endless fields, friendly neighbours, the gentle flow of the river, and time-honoured rhythms of daily living.

Just a stone’s throw away is Mabel’s Eden, a beautiful remnant of Ladakh’s royal past, with a small monastery that feels like a hidden gem. Across the palace lies the Shey marshland, a haven for birders and home to a wide range of wetland species. There’s also a Rock and Mineral museum nearby, perfect for those curious about Ladakh’s unique geology.

With the Indus River flowing right by here, it’s not hard to find a peaceful spot along its banks, whether you’re wandering through the village or walking back from Shey Palace.

When the day winds down, return to Mabel’s Eden, step out onto the terrace, and sit beneath the moonlight, and find the kind of serenity that fills you up.
