Escape the hustle and bustle of Dharamshala and visit a home with mesmerising views of snow-capped mountains. The Gorkha’s Home is a restored 118-year-old mud house built during the British era by a Gorkha family. The house still sees mud flooring and mud walls with wood panelling in sync with local village architecture.
The views are amazing – one can see a 180-degree view of the breathtaking snow-capped Dhauladhar ranges standing behind the valley; the meadows look like a Van Gogh painting, with different hues of green and yellow, and one can choose to indulge in a number of trails that are waiting to be explored.
There is also a stream right next to the house for those who enjoy spending time by the water. The hosts are deeply involved in restoring the property and starting an organic farm to try and be off the grid by the next decade.
The property is pet friendly and has two Labradors and one cat as permanent residents.
comforts
The property comes with four double rooms of different sizes and at different levels of the house. It can accommodate a total of ten guests. Extra mattresses are available with prior notice. There is a western-style WC, an Indian toilet, and a bamboo bathroom, with a small geyser for bucket baths. Another bathroom has a hot shower and a WC. Why are we explaining this? Well, there are no attached bathrooms as the house is over 115 years old and the hosts have tried to retain its original structure. All the spaces on the property outside, beside the verandah, the living room and the kitchen, are common areas for guests.
food
The property offers simple home-cooked vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals that need to be pre-ordered. All vegetables and ingredients are locally-sourced. If you have any particular meal preference, do check in advance. The hosts will be willing to prepare meals accordingly.
